History

The Thai Association for Laboratory Animal Science (TALAS) was established in 2001 to promote the advancement of laboratory animal science and the humane care and use of laboratory animals in Thailand. The association was founded by professionals and institutions involved in biomedical research, veterinary medicine, animal care, and scientific education who recognized the growing importance of ethical, high-quality standards for animal research in Thailand.

Since its establishment, TALAS has served as a professional platform for veterinarians, researchers, scientists, physicians, technicians, educators, administrators, and laboratory animal care personnel. The association was created to encourage collaboration, education, and professional development in laboratory animal science while supporting responsible research practices and animal welfare.

TALAS has continuously promoted education and training through conferences, workshops, seminars, and scientific meetings. These activities have contributed significantly to the improvement of standards in laboratory animal care, facility management, veterinary oversight, research ethics, and regulatory compliance throughout Thailand. The association also supports implementation of the principles of the 3Rs — Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement — in scientific research involving animals.

On the international stage, TALAS became one of the founding members of the Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations in 2003, together with associations from Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, and China. TALAS has actively participated in regional cooperation and scientific exchange to strengthen laboratory animal science throughout Asia.

Over the years, TALAS has expanded its network and collaborations with national and international organizations, including institutions involved in animal welfare, accreditation, and laboratory animal science education. The association continues to play an important role in supporting Thailand’s biomedical research community and promoting internationally accepted standards for animal care and use.

Today, TALAS remains committed to advancing laboratory animal science, fostering professional excellence, supporting ethical research practices, and strengthening the laboratory animal science community both in Thailand and internationally.
